How to disable avatars

I added the ability to turn off avatars, smilies, thumbnails, and/or signatures.

Click on your username link (upper right), select Preferences, and select the features you want.

Aha -- now I see. Those tick boxes work if you select the radio button labelled "All the time," under "NSFW Options." (Another acronym I can't decipher.)

"Not Safe For Work," I guess. The smileys don't look particularly ribald to me, but I guess you could put salacious stuff in the avatar pictures if you wanted to.

In that case, it should be PNSFW ("potentially not safe for work").
