The Penguin on Windows??
Last week at the Microsoft BUILD Conference Kevin Gallow the Vice President of the Windows Developer Platform announced that one will soon be able to run an Ubuntu Linux image natively on Windows systems. This will allow you to do things like Bash shell scripting on Windows and running common Linux command-line utilities like awk, sed and grep. An update for Windows 10 that will provide this functionality is apparently scheduled for release sometime this summer.

My question of course to all this is, Why? But if you're interested in finding out more about this new capability that's coming, you can check out the following blog posts:

  • Ubuntu on Windows -- The Ubuntu Userspace for Windows Developers (Dustin Kirkland)
  • Developers can run Bash Shell and user-mode Ubuntu Linux binaries on Windows 10 (Scott Hanselman)
Also check out these videos on Channel 9:

  • Linux Command Line on Windows
  • Running Bash on Ubuntu on Windows
Finally MSDN has some details on the implementation architecture for this new functionality:

You can get it now if you're on the Windows Insider program. Fast Ring users got build 14316 several days ago.

I installed the Linux subsystem and am pretty impressed! bash color coding/escape sequences don't work when attached to take command though.
