TakeCommand no longer showing its icon in Win7 Taskbar

Since I updated to Tcmd v11 x64 Build 44, my Win7 Pro taskbar is no longer showing the TakeCommand icon, but instead a bland generic icon.

What it shows now with build 44:

What it *should* show instead:
WhatItShouldBe.jpg

Any idea why?? It used to work just fine in previous Tcmd v11 x64 builds...

TakeCommand no longer showing its icon in Win7 Taskbar

Hello msheuner,

This happens to me on every upgrade. At the end of the upgrade install, I
choose to start TCC. I then right click on the task bar icon and choose
unpin. I then right click again and choose to pin. This seems to fix the
icon.

Hello Michael,

strangely enough - yes, that seems to fix the issue! Wonder why...... any insights would be welcome!

Cheers, and thanks!

That happens because the icon for the task bar is from the Windows installer
folder rather than from the program itself. When you install a new version the
old installer folder is no longer valid.

Any idea why it doesn't use the icon from the program itself? The same thing happens on Vista. Seems to me that using the icon in the program would work better.

Wrong venue for the question. Ask Microsoft! Why are the "temporary files"
created during installation retained at all? Why is the installer used for
anything other than "repair" or removal once the product is installed?
What's the consequence of removing them?

This is a "feature" of Windows Installer. Since Windows Installer can
setup shortcuts for programs that are "install-on-demand", it needs to
have some icon for it on the local disk, since the actual executable may
not yet be installed on the system at all.

As to why it seems to insist on using this approach for programs that
are NOT installed on demand, I have no clue. To me, it smells heavily
of overengineering... :)

Or any one of:
- incorrect design
- incorrect implementation
- elitism: "we know better than anyone else"

Do you mean in %TEMP? Many installations leave stuff there and I've never seen
anything put there by another party that couldn't be deleted.

No. My %windir currently has a subdirectory named
{87148734-424B-4DD9-89B9-1413C2840D29} which contains the installer for a
USB wi-fi adapter I tested for a week or so before Christmas. It has well
over 150 hidden directories named $NTUninstallKB...$ (with some number
instead of ...).

BTW, if %TMP is defined and is different from %TEMP most temporary files
will go there...

This seems to be almost unique to TakeCommand, the only other program I
can think of that does similar is iTunes, but nothing else on my system
has shortcut problems after an upgrade and many of the items pinned to
my task bar weren't ever "installed" as much as a shortcut was placed in
the start menu and the icon was retrieved from the executable.

Other programs I install with install programs use the icon from the exe. TC is the only one I've noticed that doesn't.
Almost all Windows Installer shortcuts do this. It has its advantages... namely the install on demand as previously mentioned, and the fact that it can repair the program automatically even if the main exe file is deleted, for example.
