OT: WinXP shortcut vs. junctions

I use WinXP SP3. Many of my desktop and quick launch shortcuts point to
junction directories, to make it easier to select which version of the
product is desired.

The problem: for some unknown reason, occasionally the OS converts the
program path from the junction to the value of the junction, even though the
shortcut file is read only. Anyone with a solution?

I have noticed something similar. When I had a "My Pictures" junction (to another partition on the same drive) in "My Documents" it was occasionally replaced with it a "My Pictures" directory. In my case setting the junction to read-only stopped this though.

You may have made the key point: setting the junction to r/o. I had set the
shortcut files r/o, but not the junctions.
