NTFS Descriptions not working

I've set my TakeCommand options to use NTFS descriptions, but when I add a description to a file a DESCRIPT.ION file is created and the description is put in there instead. How do I get TakeCommand to use NTFS descriptions, as the option doesn't seem to do it?

What do you get when you display these values;
Code:
e:\utils>option Descriptions
Descriptions=Yes

e:\utils>option NTFSDescriptions
NTFSDescriptions=No

Also, what Windows version and TCMD/TCC version?

Joe

I've changed my Description to use NTFSDescriptions.

I DESCRIBEd a file, and the description was added to the SummaryInformation (Which is correct);

I did a search of my DESCRIPT.ION file, and it was not found (Which is correct).

I can do;
Code:
e:\downloads>dir /z modLargeAddressAware.zip

Volume in drive E is New Volume Serial number is 2c1e:6e61
Directory of  E:\Downloads\modLargeAddressAware.zip

modLargeAdd→      1299  2021-03-25 12:41 Large Address Aware
and I see that the description is as it should be.

From the Advanced Tab of the Options dialog;

...after selecting NTFS descriptions, did you click OK or Apply;

I selected Apply, then OK, and then I started a new TCC tab.

Where is the target file? On your hard drive, or some external drive, like say a USB flash drive? You might check that the file system is NTFS.

The files are on an NTFS network drive. Directory Opus file manager can edit the NTFS description just fine. TakeCommand won't.

And as I said earlier, OPTIONS is reporting that I have descriptions turned on (of course - we can see it there) and NTFS descriptions enabled.

This facility is important to me, so because Directory Opus gives it to me and for some reason TakeCommand doesn't, I think I'll have to go for a refund on Take Command. How do I go about that?

At a wild guess, TCC is not detecting that your shared drive is NTFS. What does echo %@fstype[t:] report? Do descriptions work as expected on drive C: ?

Refunds would be up to Rex, [email protected]. (I'm not an employee, despite the fancy title in the forum.)

It seems to be OK here.

But, how do you get rid of NTFS descriptions? The help doesn't mention an easy way (or any way to do one file). I tried

Code:
describe /c0 . /r

That made DESCRIPT.ION but did not remove the streams of the NTFS description

Copying the file to a non-NTFS drive should delete the NTFS description.

EDIT: I just copied a file to a FAT32 USB drive, and it does indeed get rid of the NTFS decription.

echo %@fstype[t:] returns NTFS, but yes, it does work on local drives. Unfortunately I have a business need for it to work on the network drives, so it looks like TC isn't the right tool for me.

You could delete the ␅SummaryInformation stream. (You don't have to type that funky character; just type a colon and hit Tab. It'll be the first stream name that filename completion finds.)

That's what I did. There was also one with a GUID for a name.

But a delete option for DESCRIBE would have been a lot easier.
