That's one of the problems I have with them: instead of changing them
continually I think you should offer new versions (with at least minmal
doc of what changed) without deleteing the old.

Gives me a timeout error. I suspect you have filtered us naughty
Europeans again?

So why not put your versions there? I'd be happy to put up a link to a
site that's reliably available.

I thought it was about helping others. Craving publicity never crossed
my mind.

And as much of Asia and the southern hemisphere as I can. And it's not "again"
it simply stays that way.

I'll put some more stuff on barnyard.syr.edu when I get a chance. It'll be
plain old FTP.

I believe I've gotten ftp://lucky.syr.edu/4plugins and
ftp://barnyard.syr.edu/pub/vefatica/4plugins to approximately match. I'll try to
keep them that way.

it may be time to move some of your plug-in features around to fewer ones,
and as Wendy asked, put the early ones which Rex since built into the
interpreter into version-specific ones.

New Plugins won't work in v8 anyway. If you have one that works with v8, hang
on to it. @SHPATH[] is gone in newer ones.

I don't wish to provide support that goes back to the beginning of plugin-time.
I simply don't have old versions.

This has festered now with me for a few days, and I have to say I still
find it offensive.

You are filtering out simply on country of origin, which in my case is
Germany and the biggest, state-owned network provider. T-Online does
probably more against spam and viruses than many of your usa-side
providers.

This is imho a typical usa discrimination vs. the rest of the world.

which, I guess, he may have meant with tongue in cheek. I feel, however,
that this is your true feeling versus Europe, which is your (USA's) ally
in Nato, fighting on your side in Afghanistan etc.

I don't see that this discrimination offers real advantages over a good
firewall and viruschecker.

I'm sorry you find it offensive. It's not as specific as that. I filter on the
basis of what internet registry is responsible for a particular IP address
(ARIN, RIPENCC, APNIC, AFRINIC, LACNIC). I don't know the country of origin.

I am not a xenophobe. It is an utterly practical matter. Lucky hosts a mail
server which serves me (under several aliases) and about 100 others (in various
mailing list combinations). And lucky hosts an FTP server as you know. The
filters cut the numbers of spam attempts, some of which would succeed, and the
number of ftp_logon_as_admin attempts (which can number in the tens of
thousands) drastically.

By far, attacks from APNIC addresses are most common. RIPENCC is next with ARIN
close behind. The big providers all do a good job eliminating spam at the
source. Upstart providers don't.

I'll leave the filters off for a while just to see how bad things are these
days. But they're very likely to return.

As I write:

T 20100606 145355 4bb58e6f Connection from 109.167.47.61
T 20100606 145356 4bb58e6f HELO home-94f39309ef

The transaction was denied because of the HELO name.

Let's not blame the whole country.

which is your (USA's) ally in Nato, fighting on your side in Afghanistan etc.

Many (actually, it is probably most, judging by recent polls) U.S. citizens disagree with our government's foreign policy. However, corporations and special interests have considerable power these days.

I had hopes that things would look up after g. doubya b.'s reign. It
seems that it is still a hard fight to send the rats back to their
holes.

IMHO it simply doesn't do to filter out whole continents or even single
countries, even if they are notorious for the antics of some of their
inhabitants (like Nigeria here: do you want me to help to get a few
million dollars out of here?).

Using that method you'll always bar more honest people than culprits. I
feel there must be better, more intelligent methods.

Did you notice how the Republican party went out of their way to lose the last
election? They saw it coming. Obama's no fool; he did too.
