Command join character variable

I find myself in need to changing the default ampersand command join character for some specific tasks. I know I can adjust that with setdos but I'd like to convert a few existing batch files that use command joins with & to a generic reference. I thought at one point TCC had a variable that represented whatever the current command join character was but I can't find a reference to that in the help system.

Did I dream that that was a thing?

It's been deprecated for a while now, but as far as I know it still works.

Ah, %+! That was it. It does still work it seems. Any idea on why it's destined for the trash heap?

It was deprecated many years ago when people stopped running both COMMAND.COM and CMD.EXE (which used different command separators). Now, it's a support pain because people set it, forget they did it, and then complain that TCC won't run their CMD batch files.
