    Join the forums
After you have joined, access the Forum:
Joining The Support Forum
To join the support forum simply go to the "join" web page (see link below) and enter the required information.
Be sure to:
We suggest that you leave the other fields ("See your messages" and "Acknowledgments") at their default values.
After joining via the web page, you will receive a confirmation email from email.sparklist.com. You must respond to this email to activate your membership. Once membership is activated you will receive another email which welcomes you to the forum and explains our access rules and policies. Please read it carefully as you will be expected to comply with these policies in your use of the forum.
To join the forum use this address:
You may also visit the support forum through the web site without joining, in which case you will be able to search and read messages but not post them. To do so go to the visitors' web page at:
Note that the email address you use as Forum ID will be visible by all visitors and members, as expected when posting to any public venue.
Accessing The Forum
Newsgroup access gives you the best control over which messages you read, and gives you the ability to see the "thread" (message hierarchy) for each topic.
To access the forum as a newsgroup via your web browser, use these URLs:
If you use a news reader (such as Agent or Gravity), set your reader as follows:
server: email.sparklist.com
newsgroup: jpsoft_support
When you connect to the server, your software may also show you a list of other newsgroups hosted by SparkList. These newsgroups belong to other SparkList customers and are not related to JP Software in any way. In order to use newsgroup access you will normally want to select nomail status when you join, or switch to nomail (see Membership Types below). For some additional tips see More Details below.
Web access allows you to use a web browser to access the forum and to search, read and post messages. To do so, use this URL:
From this page you can read and post messages, and change your membership settings. If you use web access you will normally want to select "nomail" status when you join, or switch to nomail (see Membership Types below).
Email access sends all messages posted to the forum to your mailbox. The way you receive the messages depends on your membership type (mail, digest, or index). See Membership Types below for details.
To post a message, send email to the forum address:
(Do NOT send server commands to this address. It is only for posting actual substantive messages to the forum.)
When you reply to a forum message the reply will normally go to the forum as well. If you wish to reply privately, use the appropriate options in your email software to reply to the "From" address in the original message, instead of the "Reply-to" address.
Membership Types
Your forum membership can be one of four types. The types are:
To set your membership type go to the web page (see Web Access above), enter your email address and password, and select Your Settings. The Status field controls your membership type.
You can also send a command to change your membership type to the server via email. To do so, send an email message to sparklist@email.sparklist.com with a blank subject and one of the following single lines in the text, without a signature:
      set jpsoft_support mail
      set jpsoft_support digest
      set jpsoft_support index
      set jpsoft_support nomail
Leaving The Forum
To leave the forum at any time go to the web page (see Web Access above), enter your email address and password, and then use the Leave button. If you are signed up as a mail or digest member you can use the direct unsubscribe link provided at the end of each message emailed to you.
You can also leave the forum by sending an email message to sparklist@email.sparklist.com with a blank subject and the following single line in the text, without a signature:
    unsubscribe jpsoft_support
Newsgroup Tips
A user name and password is not technically required for newsgroup access. However, some news readers may communicate with the server in a way that causes errors if you try to post a message without supplying a valid email address and password. If this happens be sure you have joined the forum as described above (with membership type nomail). Then set your news reader's user ID for email.sparklist.com to the email address you used when joining, and your password to the password you used, if any.
The jpsoft_support newsgroup is locally hosted and is available only from the email.sparklist.com server. It is not part of usenet and cannot be accessed from any other news server. If your news client has trouble with the news: URL, it might be because it enforces the largely ignored rule (RFC1738) that a "news:" URL is strictly for usenet and should not contain a server name. Try switching to the nntp: URL.
Passwords
You may assign yourself a password when you join the forum, or add one later. To add or change your password after joining go to the web page (see Web Access above), enter your email address and current password (if any), and select "Your Settings".
The advantage of using a password is that no one else will be able to change your forum settings via the web interface or post messages in your name. We recommend but don't require that you use a password. The disadvantage is that you must remember the password for forum access via the web interface, and in some cases when using a news reader.
Signatures
Whether you post to the Forum via the news or email interfaces, please try to keep your "signature" short, typically no more than 3 or 4 lines, and precede it by a "sigdash" or "sigsep" which is a line consisting of only two dashes followed by a single space, i.e. "-- ", without the quotes.
The sigdash allows other programs to recognize when the body of your message is finished and where the signature begins. This is useful for automatically removing the signature when quoting for a reply, as well as isolating it from the relevant part of the message for display or archiving. Most current mail and news clients automatically produce or at least recognize sigsdashes.
Forum Archives
In general, all Forum messages are automatically archived and accessible for searching and reading by any member or visitor at any time. The archives are purged on a regular basis to eliminate obsolete postings that would have a limited practical use as reference. Messages posted more than a year ago are typically no longer available.
While it's wise to always run a quick search before posting a new message to avoid redundancy, don't expect that all questions have already been addressed and that a specific answer will always be in the archives.
